Look backward

Past statements can reveal insurance, memberships, school costs, vehicle expenses, holidays and other periodic spending.

Estimate an annual total

Dividing a known annual cost by the months until it is due can make the future payment less surprising.

Keep categories separate

A sinking fund for a planned annual bill is different from an emergency reserve for genuinely unexpected expenses.

Update after the bill arrives

Use the actual amount to improve next year's estimate.
